INTERCESSIONS

15th December 2002

Let us pray for people in a world crying out in need.

First, a prayer for peace at a time when we are looking forward to the coming on earth of God's Son, in an act of supreme love.

Almighty God, from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed:
Kindle, we pray thee, in the hearts of all men the true love of peace; and guide with thy pure and peaceable wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth; that in tranquillity thy kingdom may go forward, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of thy love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.       Bishop Francis Paget, 1851-1911

Now, a prayer for our church and for ourselves.

O God, make the door of this house wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship, and a heavenly Father's care; and narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hate. Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling-block to children, nor to straying feet, but rugged enough to turn back the tempter's power; make it a gateway to thine eternal kingdom.      Bishop Thomas Ken, 1637-1711

Now let us pray for all those individuals in special need of our prayers: the sick in body or in mind, the injured, the lonely, and the unloved. Let us remember those known to us who are in special need of our prayers at this time; we lift them to you now in a moment of silence …

Jesus Christ is the light of the world, a light which no darkness can quench. We remember before God those who have died and light a candle to symbolise the light of Christ, which eternally shines and brings hope. We remember Annie D--

You turn our darkness into light,
in your light shall we see light.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ, Amen

Gathering our prayers and praises into one, let us sing the prayer our Saviour taught us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
On earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
Now and for ever. Amen.
