INTERCESSIONS

22nd September 2002

Let us pray for all people and nations throughout the world.

Lord God, you know our wants and needs, even before we express them; but even so we bring our hopes, fears, wants, and needs before you today in prayer.

We pray for the nations of the world, especially those in conflict, anger, dispute, and enmity towards one another. We bring before you especially the countries of the United States, Britain, Iraq, Palestine, and Israel. Hatred, revenge, and punishment are easy feelings to give in to. Help our leaders to keep in mind forgiveness, love, compassion, and the teaching of Christ Our Lord. Help them to love their neighbours, however far away and different those neighbours may appear.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer

We pray for the local community, for those who lead us in politics, religion, teaching, or any other capacity. Give them strength for their tasks, patience, and understanding; and guide them in their work.

We especially bring before you the family, friends and colleagues of Philip Hendry. He gave much of his life, time & energy to local government; and he will be sadly missed.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer

We pray for those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit. We ask for healing for them, and pray for those who love them, care for them, and look after them.

We pray especially for the families and friends of those children who have been murdered recently. We do not understand why such horror and sadness should come into their lives. Grant those touched personally by these recent events your peace, that they may find comfort and understanding in your love.

We name those known to us who need healing of any kind, and pray for them personally in a moment of silence.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer

Jesus Christ is the light of the world, a light which no darkness can quench. We remember before God those who have died and light a candle to symbolise the light of Christ, which eternally shines and brings hope. We remember David J--

You turn our darkness into light,
in your light shall we see light.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen

We will now say the Lord's Prayer together. You can find the words we use on the back page of your service sheet. And we will use the new form of the Lord's Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come, your will be done, On earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
Now and for ever.
Amen.
