INTERCESSIONS

2nd December 2001

God of Justice, in a world where men and women suffer from the cruelty and neglect of their fellows, where all too often profit is more important than people, and the end is justified by any means, we pray that there will be a growing spirit of love for one another in all our doings. In the complexity of this world, help those who exercise power and authority to strive for the good of all rather than the riches of a few. And may we remember the needs of others in all our daily lives in all that we do.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of peace, teach us your ways. Open the eyes of the leaders of the nations to show them that peace is the wise way to the prosperity of every country. We pray especially for Afghanistan and for Israel, asking that out of the intransigence which leads to violence may come a new understanding and a new spirit of sharing and involvement. Open our own eyes to selfishness and greed and show us how to live with tolerance and understanding.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of love, whose son grew up in a family whose roots were deep in Israel, we pray for our families and our friends. We pray for those whose lives are involved with ours, and those who will depend upon us. We remember those with whom we work and play, and ask that your blessing may be on them all. We pray especially for those who we know are ill, or in distress of mind or body; for those who are lonely or who mourn; and those who have lost their way in life and have no hope in this time of hope. Give to all your comfort and your strength and show us how we may help them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of our forefathers, whose son came to be the unquenchable light of the world. We commend to your everlasting love those who have died and light a candle to symbolise the light of Jesus who brings us hope.

You turn our darkness into light,
in your light shall we see light.

God of hope, at this time of the year when we look forward to the coming of Jesus who is the hope of the world, we pray for our future, for the future of our world, our community, our church, ourselves, and those we love.

Open our eyes to see you at work in our world, show us what you are calling us to do.

Open our minds and make us ready for your coming.

Open our hearts to the saving love of your son.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We make our prayers in Jesus' name and in the confidence and hope which he brings, gathering them up now in the words of the prayer he taught us—
